[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
I want to thank everyone who commented on my posting yesterday and for the workshops a few of you did. For me it was an excellent learning process and has helped me improve my PP skills. As a result I was able to redo the original scan and bring the colors back to life. I’m posting another scan today and I hope you will be honest with this one as well. I’m starting a project that will involve scanning many old (really old) family photos and the advice you’ve given me so far will be very helpful to me.

Mt. Pelée erupted in 1902 and completely destroyed the town of St. Pierre, Martinique, killing over 30,000 people in a very short time. Only two people in the town are known to have survived, one was a prisoner in the poorly ventilated jail cell captured in this photograph. I first heard of this many years ago in a Sunday School class, and was amazed when I got to see it up close. For more information: Mt. Pelée

I chose to convert this to B&W, with a slight crop to the original. There weren’t many colors left due to fading, so I decided to convert. Any thoughts and comments you have are appreciated.

Thanks for viewing and have a nice weekend.

Hi Werner

A superb b&w shot of the exact location, where the prisoner survived the pyroclastic disaster. I also read about this, when I was in elementary (called 'primary' school, in Australia) & high school. Reasonable sharpness, good dof, and excellent framing & composition. Tfs!

My goodness! Though the picture is nearly 30 years old, but still it has a great charm hidden in itself.
Well documented ruins of this jail cell, from an informative POV and with nice sharpness. Thank you for your note, otherwise I night not have fully understood the shot. A tragic history of the city is associated with a great volcanic eruption.

Very well seen.

Thanks for introducing us with soms hard facts!

regards,
Paras

Good morning Werner,
Seeing this posting reminds me of the b&w photos of the destruction caused by Mt Vesuvius (sp?) when it erupted on or about the same time. The b&w rendition is effective in emphasizing the damage caused on this building. The minimal pp work is appropriate and lends a historical perspective.

Good luck on your scanning project. I also have boxes of analog pics which need to be digitized. I am too lazy, however, to scan them....I think I will take them to Ritz if it is not very expensive. Have a good w/e.

Wonderful BW capture of this tragic place!
Congratulation!

Hi Werner!

They did do a good job on those workshops; I was amazed that a scanned photo could look so good.

Love the B&W and the POV! I haven't done a B&W yet, but want to...it still won't look as good as this. :)

I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Dennis

Interesting that something designed to keep someone in served to keep danger out! Interesting shot also. How do you create a link to wiki ?
warm regards
David

HI Werner
Scanning is a nightmare for me, I defnitely and thoroughly hate it,but like you do have some photos of my travels that are worth sharing and with the lousy weather creeping up will have plenty of time to curse my results.

You did a great job of showing the destruction with pretty good sharpness. Monochrome works well for this.
