[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
F/A-18 Hornet's shockwave
A Spanish F/A-18 Hornet in a fast fly by creating the air to condensate so the pressure wave (shockwave) above the Hornet's wing can be seen. What you really see here is the condensation of the water vapour created by the extreme under pressure in relation with the relative low temperature of the humid air.

This Hornet did a high speed fly pass at the RIAT at Fairford 2009.

Taken with my Sigma 70-300 zoom lens at 1/2000 sec and f/10.0 with ISO 250ASA

Hello Hans,

Groetjes!

Hi Hans,

Interesting shot, I've seen this phenomenon captured from a side view. From the POV in your photo it looks very eerie, almost like something's wrong with the plane. Do you think a higher ISO may have helped capture a brighter image? TFS

Best regards,
Werner

It's a fantastic - and fascinating - capture here Hans. A kind of real-life wind-tunnel illustration of the effects of a plane at high speed. Incredible that it seems motionless in this shot, despite its obviously very high speed.

Hi Hans, A spectacular image and with the notes makes for an interesting science commentary. The Sigma 70-300 has done a good job and the who;e action is well frozen in time. It is always good to see your aerial photographs. TFS. Murray.

Oh that is awesome Hans! How often does a person get to see this? Oh man, I would love to take a ride, but I would toss my cookies! HAHA! I like this, it looks like a ghost! Perfect timing here, it seems a little dark like Werdir said, but geez I'm happy with whatever I can get with something like this! Nice work Hansie!

Hi Hans,
I think you have a smudge on your lens ;). Haha, just kidding mate. A very unusual scene, I wasn't aware that shockwaves could be photographed until now. You must have had a very quick reaction time, the fast shutter speed would certainly have helped too. Can see you were at your full focal length, good shot.

TFS,
Scott.

You did really well to capture the exact moment fo the shockwave, very interesting and unusual photo.

Hallo Hans,

Wat jij niet hebt met katten heb ik niet met vliegtuigen maar ik vind het weer een heel knappe foto, met de duidelijke uitleg erbij. Het lijkt me dat je een bijzondere moment heb vastgelegd!
Groetjes, Marga

Ever since my youth, I had a fascination for fast jets. Joined the airforce and got grounded on account of a perforated eardrum.
So all I can do is look at great pics like these and just dream on .........
Cheers
Otto

He Hans,
