[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
This is my youngest daughter. The one inside my wife's tummy in my previous post. She was about 23 months old when this picture was taken. We're not actually Chinese but Filipinos but my kids were wearing chinese costumes for Halloween last year so I decided on shooting them in a studio setting for fun. This was actually my first time shooting with a monolight. This was taken in our garage where I had a 9 foot wide black seamless paper background. My whitelighting was mounted with a medium chimera softbox positioned high and off to the left side of my daughter.
This photo was taken from a series of poses my daughter made in a span of 5 minutes. Small kids can be very challenging to shoot and can be quite unpredictable and in this case she dictated the pace and what pose she wanted to be in. She briefly sat on the stool and I immediately asked my wife to put a chinese umbrella behind her for background. I was able to take a couple of shots with her having different facial reactions and this was one of her more serious looks. I might decide to post some of her other poses from the same shoot in the future.
Anyway, I decided to covert the photo to black and white since the color of her dress and the umbrella doesn't match and it just draws more attention to her face. It also kinda makes it look like one of those really old photos of your gradma when she was a kid.

Anton Good day and greetings from Las Pinas.

A beauty - the model and the shot. However, this is a perfect example of how a white frame on a PC display is so detrimental. White frames just glare too much. Fine on a real-life display but not on a PC screen.
If you post more in this series, and please do, do consider displaying them to advantage. I will post a WS later, just to show you how a more suitable frame enhances the image and not the other way around.

Great capture, Anton! What a beautiful girl, and it does look like an old studio setting. I know it is against the popular train of thought here, but I do like the white frame. Frames are only secondary anyway, it is all about the photos here, no ?

I would love to see some more of this series.

Hello Anton,
Basically this is a fine portrait with many good qualities! I mention your POV, definition, expression well captured, well done on conversion an so on...
Here is potential for improvement too... Next time I'm sure you won't cut into her cute little chubby hands! Maybe you also should consider a tad different placement in the frame? Normally I don't mind center position of main subject... however, here I think you should give her a bit more space to look into..?

Like this one black and white is always the best to look at. great lighting and composition i need to learn some more from you sifu..

Very nice portrait, the expression the exposure, the capture of moment. Yes, the hand might be missing but, children can be hard to photograph at times. The frame in this image enhances the purity of the portrait.

She is a darling ! And the shot is pretty good too ! My sense here is that you could have tweaked the contrast of the image a little more through photoshop specifically in the face area. I can already see the shadows in the face but it could have been made more pronounced. Combinations of shadows and light areas in the face would have made the face more three dimensional. TFS and have a nice weekend !
