My friend and I went snowboarding at Big Bear (Snow Summit). Before we went home, I took a few snapshots.

The camera's internal hot-mirror was removed and replaced with a 90nm internal IR filter. This allows me take IR photos freehand. A digital camera without IR modification will have an exposure time at least 10 seconds even at higher ISO because the IR filter blocks all visible light. Additionally, you can't see through the lens.

At ISO 400, the IR modified camera can take IR photos freehand. After the modification, my camera can't take regular photos. I love IR photography so much (even on film like Kodak HIE) that I decided to sacrifice a camera for IR. Removing the internal mirror voids a manufacturer warranty and the sensor (CCD or CMOS) may be damaged permanently during the modification process. I sent my camera out to have it professionally modified. If you are interested, search the net and you'll find different service places out there.


The aesthetic of IR photos is interesting. The foliages(and anything green turns white and skies (and anything blue) turns dark. This is the first time, I tried an IR camera with snow.

Post processing:
At a 90nm cutoff, there is hardly any color left. I slightly change the shadow value of each RGB channel independently to add cool tone in the dark area while maintaining "the IR look" in which the foliages remain pure white.

This is lovely, Nap. I'd love to try IR photography but cannot get my old cameras adapted in Singapore :-(

You've chosen a lovely scene here, the effect is very powerful indeed. And a great note to go with the shot - good stuff!

Excellent shot Nap, and a technique I've not come across before. I thought this was just a B&W shot until I opened it, but the detail and contrast is different.

I am really fascinated by IR photos. From the first time I read about this type of photography, I always think how it will looks like. Your photo is really a very good example of IR photos. Wonderful tones and composition Nap! TFS

Hello Nap,
While this composition is quite familiar, what i like especially about it is the duotones you hav used and that bench there in that angle has a wonderful effect on the shot.Very well done.
