I took this photo of this beautiful flower today at a house where I pick up a little boy. These flowers stand out amazingly against the light colored house. I couldn't resist snapping this photo of them, the purple was so compelling!! Rich deep color, I wish I could garden as well as some people.

I knew nothing about this beautiful flower until I asked the Woman I work with, she gave me the name "Clematis" and then I searched the web and came up with:

Often called the "Queen of Vines", clematis is one of the most colourful and versatile of vines. With a rainbow of colours and a variety of flower shapes and sizes, selecting the right one for your garden is tough.

Clematis is not a self-clinging vine and so requires the support of something like a trellis. This trellis should be positioned 5 cm away from a wall in order to allow the petiole of the clematis room to slip behind and around the trellis for support. A rich, damp, well-drained site should be chosen, preferably with some protection from the wind. As walls and large trees absorb moisture from the soil plant 50 to 100 cm out from the wall and train the plant back when it has made sufficient growth .

Clematis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family which also includes hellebores, peonies, delphiniums and anemones.

This particular one is the "Alice Fisk-Clematis"

I posted a workshop with a different colored frame, which do you like better?

Hi Lori,
Clematis! One of my favorite. I love how large the blooms can get. This one looks like it may be atleast 6" across!
Very nice picture with sharp details. And the color! :)

I think maybe you can grow this without too much fuss. I gave it to a friend as a b-day gift once. It's been a couple of years and it's still in the pot it came in, and with the same 3 sticks the store had put in! The vines shrivel up in the winter, and look kind of ugly...but, in the spring and summer it's looking good again. Something to think about. ;)

Take care!
Richard

Outstanding shot of the flower Lori! I can surely see why you were compelled to capture it's beautiful image. Very informitive note as well. Keep up the good work and God's best to you!

Tim

A very beautiful flower and a great shot of it. Very clear and well focused. The colours are just gorgeous. We just planted our second one today. For years we have had a mauve one growing up the trellis on the side of the house, and today we planted a pink one alongside so they can grow together and mix colours on the wall.
You certainly got it composed nicely. I am thinking though that the frame, because it is the same colour as the flower, competes too much with the petals and takes the eye away from the main subject. Maybe a very dark violet-black colour would have been better, or even white with the thin line in the middle of the white border in a purple colour. Good work.

Just beautiful Lori. Yes, it is a Clematis, but what name, I don't know. There are many varieties and colours. This one is stunning. And what a lot of flowers there are on the vine too. Well done.

Lori, a crystal clear shot of a very beautiful clematis. As for the borders, of the two I prefer the darker one. The lighter one seems to draw my eye out of the picture rather than containing it and leading it back in. Personally I prefer black or white borders as they define the edges most clearly but life would be boring if everyone was the same wouldn't it. In fact I rarely use borders at all, although I have today as it happens.

Hi Lori, excellent shot of the flower, great colours, nice composition, details and sharpness. I like your matching frame too. Well done, thanks for sharing.

p.s I like this colour frame better. :)

Very good focus, saturated colors and composition. Framing really sets it all off. You'll have to teach me how to do that someday.

What a great macro Lori. The focus is so sharp on the centre of the clematis. Glad you got out of the bus and took this shot. I like the darker frame better, as it makes the flower pop out more. If you want to grow these yourself, keep the top in the sun, and the roots in the shade. Grow something small around the bottom of it. Just a tip I learned, and my vine is doing lovely. I'll be back tomorrow morning Lori.

Beautiful flower. I like the color of this one. Image very sharp and clear. Well done.

Hi Lori, I love Clematis I posted one of them this week, We had 3 vines of them in our yard but lost all three last year. This is a beautiful shot very nice color and clarity. Good Job.
