~ Highland Lake ~

I recently took this photograph during a flight up to Auckland. The plane was flying over the Central Plateau of New Zealand North Island, approaching the dormant volcano Mount Ruapehu. Unfortunately the latter was mostly obscured by cloud though there were a few small cloud breaks.

The photo I have posted here is of Lake Moawhango and the surrounding tussock highlands which is well covered by the winter snow. It was a challenge composing and capturing this view through a buzzing, vibrating little window and at such a height (29000 feet I think) but I hope you can see the outline of Lake Moawhango. The lake is located east of State Highway 1 between the towns of Waiouru and Turangi.

Lake Moawhango is fed by the Moawhango River which originates near Tongoriro and within the New Zealand Defence Force Army Training Area. When army exercises are not in progress the lake may be used for fishing by permit holders. Apparently there are fine sized brown and rainbow trout in the river and lake though the challenge isn’t just limited to the fishing but also to tramping across the steep and often slippery landscape to access the water.

Thanks for viewing.

Hi Martyn,
Unique view, looks awesome. Nice layered effect from this POV with the mountains, the colour variations are good too. A clear shot for being shot through glass. I haven't been on a plane for years, looks like I might have to take a spontaneous trip sometime.

TFS,
Scott.

Hello Martyn! Fantastic landscape. Wonderful wide and long perspective. Perfect focus. Good work. Good luck!

Hi Martin,

good details and good sharpness all over.

So many layers in one photo, it's amazing. Nice and clear given it's taken from a moving plane. The lake seems tiny compared to the snow covered ranges. TFS

Very good - you're lucky you got a clean and clear window! The image is nicely 'layered' if you know what I mean.

Hello Martyn, this could almost be an abstract with all the different textures and colours of an amazing landscape.
Considering that you were looking through a small window which was vibrating, I think that you did a wonderful job.
Excellent sharpness.
Interesting notes.
Tfs, regards Jean.
