A few months ago I spent a few hours visiting the Te Puia thermal valley in Rotorua. The site has many geological curiosities including several large mounds of lava rock having active super-heated steam vents.
The mound I photographed here comprises several layers or slabs of lava rock between which steam can be seen rising from deep below in the earth’s crust. There is also an impressive coating of yellow sulphur. The intense heat has created a shimmer above the vents to the left of this photo.
In stark contrast the volcanic bedrock is surrounded by lush greenery, evidently unaffected by the toxic fumes of hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide.
