here's the version where i got the focus right... by chance. the d50 is just a nightmare to manually focus on. specially if the room has low lighting. anyone there can give me tips on this issue?

It is well focused and the tones look good. Did you try to open up your DoF with a lower aperture? Say f8 -f12? TFS,

Indeed you did get it right! Nice work!
I wonder if part of your struggle is in using an aperture that's too large - if you tried a 3 or 4 the focus might be a little easier to find and the DOF would still be shallow enough for a good portrait?

Focus is good. I agree with the others, try a smaller aperture as it will allow more light in.

I'm not so sure on your models pose. Too flat/face on. You might like to place your model on a slight angle to the camera. So she looks over her shoulder into the lens.
