| here's the version where i got the focus right... by chance. the d50 is just a nightmare to manually focus on. specially if the room has low lighting. anyone there can give me tips on this issue? |

It is well focused and the tones look good. Did you try to open up your DoF with a lower aperture? Say f8 -f12? TFS,

Indeed you did get it right! Nice work!
I wonder if part of your struggle is in using an aperture that's too large - if you tried a 3 or 4 the focus might be a little easier to find and the DOF would still be shallow enough for a good portrait?

Focus is good. I agree with the others, try a smaller aperture as it will allow more light in.
I'm not so sure on your models pose. Too flat/face on. You might like to place your model on a slight angle to the camera. So she looks over her shoulder into the lens.
