Hello Karen.
Great sculpture and perfect photo! The POV is ok but ... may be a little over-expose?
Your vision about the meaning are suggestive, but I think that the hand of the man it is not tense, the fingers are relaxed. So he do not appears to be avoiding punishment at all. Your seconds interpretation is more accurate: he may be conducing carefully the viper.
