This is a large "Bergy Bit" in front of Elephant Island, Antarctic Peninsula. Yes, the Island on which Shackleton's men were stranded for over 100 days. A problem I had with many photos in the Antarctic was the lack of scale. In this case, if you find the penguin, you will get a sense of scale. Once again, I needed a wide angle lens and did not have one.

hi karin, a very nice shot, i really like the blue light on the edge of the iceberg, its maybe a little too tight of a crop for me but still very nice, i am so glad you added the penguin as it really does show the size, the iceberg is a neat shape and the mountains to the left and blue sky look amazing , a wonderful posting, take care...bbbrrrrrrrrrr cold!
thanks scott

Wondefuil shot here Karin and what an opportunity to go there! Amazing details! I guess the danger is really intense, because if you fall in the water....that's it!...I think you have 15 seconds?? is that it?? Amzzing!

Bonjour Karin
You achieved very well here to show the sense of scale with a great
image. A remarkable photo with excellent details of the texture of the
ice and with very beautiful colours. TFS

Great photo! It is incredible the size of these icebergs... sometimes I have photos of them and because I do not have a "scale" when I show it to my friends they do not realize the huge size of them! So the peguin in the photo makes a great reference. Nice note about Shackelton, I red his book about his terrific trip in Antartica and now that I see the island, well, I am more surprised that nobody of his crew died!

Hello Karin,

Wow!! A very big ice-burg!! Lovely capture. Nice colors and POV. Perfectly added scaling. Lovely capture. TFS.

Merhaba Karin,
What a superb capture vith excellent photo.Great POV, colours and light.TFs.

WOW... you sure have been on a magnificent trip Karin!
And what a perfect image! This is soooooo beautiful... I love the colors and the compo.
The ice almost looks surreal. Just perfect!

Hi Karin
STUNNING! Simply STUNNING! The POV, colours, DOF, and of course that solitary penguin on all that ice make this a fantastic composition. VERY well done! TFS on TL. You must be stoked having achieved such an outstanding capture. Brillient.

Hi Karin
Places which you visited are enrapturing me. Very much nicely you are showing them us.

Hello Karin!

Impressive scale indeed. the bergy bit seems to be as big as the mountain in the BG from this angle. The little fellow is therefore useful to put everything back in perspective.

Well spotted , and great control f the light too, giving a superb color to the ocean and immerged part of the bergy bit.

Hi Karin!

Yes, found it!! Still a good one with the 28mm!! What is the magnification factor of the chipset of the K100D? I'm not sure to be honest how to translate the 28mm to 25mm-equivalent.

But the shot surely gives a good feeling of the sheer size of this place - or perhaps it was a baby penguin ;-).

hallo Karin!
Das ist unglaublich tolles Foto!Sehr interessant!wunderschön!
Viele Grüsse!

another astonishing shot!
Did you make this antarctic trip by yourself by the way?
Anyway, the detail of the penguin makes us realize how big is nature... The shape of this iceberg is also great.

Hello, Karin.

This is stunning. Wonderful picture, wonderful colours and perfectly crisp and clear!

I know what you mean by the lack of scale. I was on an expedition to East Greenland as a student 37 years ago - I've posted a couple of pictures on TE and one on TL and TN - and I think part of the problem is the total lack of air pollution. A small piece of rock or ice in front of you looks just the same as a huge mountain or iceberg a long distance away because there's no diminution in the intensity of the light or colours.

But what a place! That must have been a wonderful trip for you.

Kind Regards,

Hello Karin,
Wow, you are so very lucky to be able to visit an amazing place like this. You are right this wouldn't look as big without that little penquin standing there on the big ice...love the color...good eye and an excellent shot. TFS

Hi Karin
Beautiful place for sure and very captivating colors. Size of the penguin gives us an idea of how large the ice block wopuld have been and its beauty...lovely! Good shot!
Congrats and thanks for sharing! :D

Hi Korin,

Hi Karin

Beautiful visual, that sees me my mind the film that I commented on previous picture, I saw a lot of these scenes, these enormous glaciers and these minuscule penguin walking in that intense cold.
Beautiful, spectacular!

What else to say? - beautiful image:)
Greetings - Tom

splendide composition glaciaire
J'aime beaucoup les nuances de blanc et de bleu.
J'ai aperçu le pinguin....

Hie Karin,

Such a majestic iceberg. I can see a penguin..whoa, that iceberg is so huge..yeah, u need a wide lens to get a wider view..but that's the limit here.

Are you sure it is not a frozen ship upside down?

Hello, Karin:)

Awesome photo, beautiful colors, great idea with this little penguin, giving the sense of scale.

And lucky you having chance to visit such an extraordinary place!

Reagards, Slavica

Hi Karen
Great photo of a titanic iceberg piece. Love the different tones of blue as well as the scale you suggest. Great work

Hi K-2,

This is terrific! A place one can only imagine! Yes, I found the little penguin. I'm glad you have that there because I would have NEVER imagined the size.

I love the contrast of blues and whites, water, depth of field, sharpness, and of courses, our little friend....I guess he's the Emperor! haha

tfs, Lisa

I might repeat myself looking at your photos but this is perfection in 800x456 pixels:)
The colors are just great, don`t get me wrong, but the strong point of your photo is the slide shape of that ice mountain which makes me thing ofa splash in that beautiful (...and deadly) blue water.
About the scale what can I say; I feel so humble even just looking at the photo...
Superb work,Karin!
P.S. Nobody "criticized" me so much on this website so I want and I will have my revenge:)

What scenery! The penquin live in tough territory!

The pinquin shows how great the sight is
It is a funny detail to show the greatness

Great shot here of this little penquin trekking away across this vast and incredible landscape. It appears like he or she is on the back of giant ice shark! A remarkable photo!

bonjour karin

wish there's a place like this in my country!

Hi Karin, I like to see this remote area on trek sites. The huge icy island which can still sustain life is an amazing thing about nature. The penguine looks so tint. The blue tones are beautiful. TFS. Murray.

Great shot, nice subject even if it is the smallest on the pic, great scenary, tfs!

Que cosa tan hermosa, felicidades

Hi Ms Karin, It is really a fabulous image from Antarctic Peninsula. I would like to go there to explore it too but it looks like it is pretty cold there. The huge piece of iceberg sitting there is another magic from our nature. Great composition and details. I am already feeling that plenty of penguins swimming towards the ice and will spend their time on it with a lot of fun. Thank for sharing
