[Notas - Normas] Nota do Artista
For the scavenger hunt "My Childhood" theme.

A home made toy which used to keep us occupied for hours when I was a child.

Something reminded me of these, so I went looking for the components to make this one, a cotton reel (thread spool, as it's called in Canada), a rubber band, a popsicle stick and a matchstick. A simple toy, but hours of fun adjusting it to try and get it working better. Luckily I was able to find a wooden cotton reel, it just wouldn't be the same with a plastic one! You wind it up, twisting the rubber band, then put it down on a smooth surface, and if you're lucky, it rolls along.

Minor post processing - cropping, brightness/contrast/saturation adjustment, resizing, sharpening, added frame.

Interesting note, great POV.

Nice macro. Simple and well composed. I like the framing as well.

Wonderful, emotive image of the simple pleasures of being a child. I like the warm tones created by all the wood: the table, the spool and the popsicle stick. Great composition too, with the main lines of the image forming a strong V-shape. Very well done!

Kate, it's simply but beautiful, the wooden framing pattern is a good choice here, TFS

Hi Kate,
Great macro. It really brings back memories of a long gone simple childhood. We used to cut saw tooth edges on the two sides of the reel so that it would climb over obstacles easily.
Thank you very much for this photo.
Sunil

Hello Kate,
I remember this one too... you bring back childhood memories, and that is a good thing in a picture! Simple but effective composition, great detail... I can almost feel the texture...
Regards,
Pablo

Nice composition, perspektiv....

Great perspective and lighting. Isn't it nice to have these simple things in life that once used to occupy us for so many hours as opposed to today. Kids are occupied with video games, TV, text messaging, computer and all the new age tech. Innocence lost.

Very clean woody picture; like some poster of a hobbymaterial or toys.
I like your intiative and the story.

I used to make these too. SOmetime we used a piece of candle on the drive side to reduce the friction a get a bit more speed.

Thanks for unearthing a memory and congrats on teh picture

Hi Kate, an other shot that I prefer from your gallery, nice shot with good colors and over all you have remembered me this game, thanks a lot.

I like the simplicity of this shot. Very clear. Good sharpening. Gives me and idea for a toy for my grandson too. Bonus!

Hi Kate. Good shot and P.P. work. To make a super fast version of this toy cut a thin slice through a candle remove the wick, put the elastic band through the wick hole, place it between the popsicle stick and cotton reel. It reduces friction. Thanks for sharing !!!!!!
